AUGUSTIN VARGAS was born in Coyacan, Mexico, D.F. and earned a degree in architecture at the University of Mexico in Mexico City. Postgraduate studies were completed at the Antique Academy of San Carlos and Fine Arts National Institute, both in Mexico City.

The paintings of Augustin Vargas reveal the artist's interest in draftmanship and geometry. They also reflect a keen interest in observing and recording the natural and man-made world around him. Vargas will oftentimes apply gold leave to the surfaces of his paintings, inscribing its delicate surface with words of personal reflection or architectural diagrams. He has long been fascinted with the "golden mean," a canon of proportion in painting, sculpture and architecture that was initially worked out in the 1st centruy B.C. by Vitruvius.
