James Drake was born in Lubbock, Texas and received his BFA and MFA from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles.
He has established an international reputation for his massive steel sculptures, drawings and multi-media installations and his work is included in many public collections including the Brooklyn Museum, the National Museum of American Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
After a national search, James Drake was selected to commemorate the Civil Rights Marches of 1963, creating a massive three piece walk-through installation for Kelly Ingram Park in Birmingham, Alabama. He was included in the 2000 Whitney Biennial.
